➤What is the Lightning Protection System? 

The Lightning Protection System is a type of system that protects our used electrical components from lightning, unwanted electricity and earth leakage currents
.


➤How many types of lightning protection system are available .?

There are five types of lightning protection systems for structural protection against  thunderstorms.
  •  Lightning rod.
  •  Mashed Conductor
  •  Catenary Wires
  •  Early Emission Lightning Protection System
  •  Natural Protection System 
However, The Lightning Rod system is more widely used around the world. So today we will talk about the Lightning Rod Protection System.

➤The lightning rod protection system is again four types. Ex :


  • Class A Type :
Class A type lightning protection system is used in nuclear power plants,computer center & military applications.


  • Class B Type :
Class B type lightning protection system is used in industrial sector.


  • Class C Type :
Class C Type Lighting Protection System is used for hospitals, banks, museums, office buildings, 2000 square meters.


  • Class D Type :
Class D Type Lighting Protection System is used for any small installation, house or home.




 ➤How to decide Lightning Protection System Risk ?

  • Design of lightning protection risk is made by visiting the site, calculating the height and wide of the building.Then the lightning protection system design is created.

➤For the purpose of determining  lightning protection system risk:
  • To use international & national quality protection.
  • Identity the hazards of the lightning protection system and make corrective action.
  • To eliminate lightning hazards associated with building and structures.
  • Choosing the right lightning protection system.

  •  Oil Industry Directorate (OSID) 180
  •  IEC Standard Lighting Protection (IEC 62305)
  •  American Petroleum Institute (API) RP 2003 - Lightning Protection Standard

➤Here are some basic tips for install lightning protection system :

  • Distance from one earth pit to another earth pit should be within 100 feet.
  • The distance from one air terminal to another air terminal for the factory must be at least 20 feet in accordance with Accord Alliance rules.
  • Copper cross connection need to be joined using cross base to join.
  • If the roof top area width is above 50 feet, then the roof conductor should be in a horizontal manner.
  ➤The four main components of the lightning protection system are :

  • Air terminal
  • Copper flat bar to use on the roof of the building
  • Copper rod for grounding
  • Earth boring
➤What is the amount of lightning rod that can carry current..?

Lightning rod can usually carry 1 million to 10 billion volts current.
